Development of TC Type Insulated Overlaps

The contact wire supplying electric power to pantographs sometimes melts and severs from heat generated by too great a current of arcing (electrical sparking) between direct current electric railroad feeding systems when a train stops at an insulated feeding section overlap. TC type insulated overlaps were therefore developed by JR East to prevent contact wire melting and severing. Due to large surface areas, TC type insulated overlaps create high heat radiation and a contact wire tension relief function when the contact wire mechanical strength is softened and deteriorated by heat. JR East confirmed characteristics of arcing resistance and sufficient overhead contact line system component functioning ability in developed TC type insulated overlap tests. Developed insulated overlaps will be introduced and an overview of the tests will be given in this article.
