GAMMA-RAY WELD-INSPECTION SYSTEM
A SYSTEM CONTAINING THREE THULIUM GAMMA-RADIATION SOURCES WAS USED TO INSPECT AN OPPOSED-ARC WELD FOR WELD-NUGGET PENETRATION IN AN ALUMINUM-COPPER ALLOY. THE SYSTEM COMPARED THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GAMMA-RADIATION ATTENUATION THROUGH THE CENTER OF THE WELD, WHERE ATTENUATION WAS GREATER OWING TO CONCENTRATION OF COPPER, WITH THAT THROUGH THE SIDES. THE AMOUNT OF COPPER CONCENTRATION INCREASED WITH WELD-NUGGET OVERLAP. /AUTHOR/
