EVAPORATION OF SOLVENTS FROM PAINT FILMS: EVAPORATION OF SOLVENT BLENDS
PHASE I OF THIS WORK WAS THE STUDY OF THE CHANGE IN COMPOSITION OF SOLVENT BLENDS WITH EVAPORATION AND EVAPORATION RATE OF NEAT SOLVENTS. EVAPORATION FOLLOWS CERTAIN PATTERNS. SOME BLENDS FIT THESE PATTERNS WELL, ESPECIALLY THOSE EXPECTED TO FORM IDEAL SOLUTIONS, WHILE OTHERS SUCH AS ALCOHOL/HYDROCARBON BLENDS DEVIATE BECAUSE OF HYDROGEN BONDING. THE EVAPORATION RATE OF ALCOHOLS IS CONCENTRATION DEPENDENT. WHEN ALCOHOLS EVAPORATE FROM DILUTE SOLUTIONS, THE RATE IS MANY TIMES THAT EXPECTED. A NEW GRAPHICAL METHOD HAS BEEN DEVISED AND FOUND USEFUL IN PREDICTING THE EVAPORATION RATE OF ALCOHOLS IN DILUTE SOLUTIONS. EFFECTIVE EVAPORATION RATES OF THE ALCOHOLS FROM SEVERAL BLENDS ARE GIVEN. /JPT/
