A New Rutting Evaluation Indicator for Asphalt Mixtures
Considerable research indicates that shear deformation rather than densification in asphalt mixture layer accounts for most of the rutting in hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavements. This paper is aimed to use a newly developed test method to evaluate this type of shear flow rutting instead of the conventional wheel tracking test. A relationship between the shear strength derived from SUPT test and rutting of asphalt mixtures is well established. Then, the shear strength as an indicator to control rutting is put forward for various traffic volumes.
