RAPID AND CONTINUOUS EVALUATION OF CORROSION USING EXTREMELY THIN METAL SUBSTRATES

A RAPID AND CONTINUOUS OBSERVATION METHOD FOR THE EVALUATION OF CORROSION, BASED ON THE USE OF A VERY THIN STEEL FOIL SUBSTRATE MOUNTED ON GLASS WITH AN ADHESIVE, IS DESCRIBED. THIS FOIL, WHICH IS LESS THAN ONE-TENTH OF A MIL IN THICKNESS, WAS COATED WITH PAINT SYSTEMS AND EXPOSED TO ACCELERATED TEST ENVIRONMENTS. CORROSIVE ATTACK WAS OBSERVED THROUGH THE GLASS, BEFORE ANY VISIBLE DETERIORATION APPEARED ON THE COATED FACE, AND CORROSION WAS FOUND TO OCCUR WITH SEVERAL STAGES AND MECHANISMS. SEVERAL WET-DRY CYCLES WERE EVALUATED. A TECHNIQUE FOR THE MOUNTING OF THIN FOIL ON GLASS IS ALSO DESCRIBED. /JPT/
