DETERMINATION OF ADHESION BETWEEN RIGID AND FLEXIBLE MATERIALS

THE ANGLE OF SEPARATION MUST BE ACCURATELY CONTROLLED TO OBTAIN RELIABLE ADHESION TEST RESULTS. THE MACHINE METHOD OF ASTM TESTS FOR ADHESION OF VULCANIZED RUBBER IS INTENDED TO FULFILL THIS REQUIREMENT FOR DETERMINING ADHESION STRENGTH BETWEEN VULCANIZED RUBBER AND TEXTILE FABRICS. HOWEVER, THIS METHOD WAS NEVER INTENDED FOR DETERMINING THE ADHESION BETWEEN FLEXIBLE MATERIALS AND RIGID BACKINGS, AND MAKES NO PROVISION FOR THE USE OF A 90 DEGREE PEEL ANGLE FOR STRIP SPECIMENS. WHEN THE DEPARTMENT OF NATIONAL DEFENSE (CANADA), QUALITY ASSURANCE LABORATORIES, WERE ASKED TO DETERMINE THE ADHESION BETWEEN THIN COPPER STRIPS AND GLASS REINFORCED PLASTIC OF PRINTED CIRCUITS USING A 90 DEGREE PEEL TEST METHOD, IT WAS DECIDED TO MODIFY ASTM D 413-39 (1965) BY ADDITION OF A TROLLEY OR JIG TO PERMIT ADHESION TESTS WITH AN ACCURATELY CONTROLLED 90 DEGREE PEEL ANGLE. THIS TROLLEY DESIGN IS PRESENTED. THE TROLLEY HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO ACCEPT VARIOUS OTHER MATERIALS AND USED TO DETERMINE THE ADHESION OF MICROFILM TO ITS CARD MOUNTING.
