ON SHEAR RIGIDITY OF SWASH BULKHEADS FOR LARGE OIL TANKERS

A series of experiments on the shear rigidity of tranverse bulkheads for oil tankers, using specimens made of acrylic resin, clarified the shear rigidity of water-tight bulkheads and the effect of deck and bottom plates on it, concerning the swash bulkhead. The relation between shear rigidity and opening area ratio, the effects of the shape, size and arrangement of the opening on the shear rigidity also became clear. Desirable forms of the structure of swash bulkheads were clarified.
