INFLUENCE OF TEMPERATURE ON GALVANIC CORROSION
RESULT OF A RECENT CORROSION EXPERIMENT SUGGESTED THAT TEMPERATURE MIGHT HAVE A MARKED INFLUENCE ON THE RATE OF GALVANIC CORROSION OF IMMERSED COUPLES. MILD STEEL AND ALUMINUM (1100 ALLOY) SPECIMENS, 2 X 8 X 0.064 INCHES, WERE WEIGHED AND THEN SPACED 0.4 INCH APART, SHORTED ELECTRICALLY, AND IMMERSED (TO 6.5 INCHES) IN BEAKERS CONTAINING 5% SODIUM CHLORIDE SOLUTION MAINTAINED AT 12, 23 AND 35 C FOR 15 DAYS. AFTER IMMERSION, THE ALUMINUM SPECIMENS WERE STRIPPED IN HOT PHOSPHORIC-CHROMIC SOLUTION (ASTM 137-45) AND REWEIGHED TO DETERMINE THE WEIGHT LOSS DUE TO GALVANIC CORROSION. IT IS APPARENT THAT TEMPERATURE HAS A MARKED INFLUENCE ON THE RATE OF GALVANIC CORROSION OF THE ALUMINUM-IRON COUPLE IN SALT SOLUTION. FROM OTHER WORK, IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE EXTENT OF THE INFLUENCE OF TEMPERATURE WILL BE SPECIFIC TO THE COUPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT. /AUTHOR/
