HOLOGRAPHIC NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING (HNDT)
TIRES, SANDWICH STRUCTURES, DISK BRAKES AND NUMEROUS OTHER ARTICLES USED IN TRANSPORTATION CAN NOW BE TESTED NONDESTRUCTIVELY WITH IMPROVED SPEED, ACCURACY AND RELIABILITY. KEY TO THIS VERSATILE NEW METHOD IS HOLOGRAPHIC INTERFEROMETRY, WHICH USES COHERENT LIGHT TO RECORD AND RECONSTRUCT THREE-DIMENSIONAL IMAGES. MINUTE SUBSURFACE ANOMALIES ARE CAUSED BY HEAT, PRESSURE, VACUUM, VIBRATION OR OTHER STRESSES (WELL BELOW THE ELASTIC LIMIT) TO PRODUCE CORRESPONDING MINUTE DEFORMATIONS OF THE TEST-OBJECT SURFACE, WHERE INTERFERENCE-FRINGE ANOMALIES ARE FORMED, AND DRAMATICALLY INDICATE THE POSITIONS, SHAPES AND SIZES OF THE HIDDEN FLAWS. /AUTHOR/
