RAPID DETERMINATION OF THE NON-VOLATILE CONTENT OF LIQUID COATINGS USING A HOT-WIRE TECHNIQUE
A METHOD IS DESCRIBED WHICH ALLOWS THE NON-VOLATILE CONTENT OF CLEAR AND PIGMENTED LIQUID COATINGS TO BE DETERMINED IN A TOTAL ELAPSED TIME OF LESS THAN SEVEN MINUTES (INCLUDING SAMPLE HANDLING, HEATING AND CALCULATION TIME). THE PRINCIPLE USED INVOLVES THE PASSAGE OF A CONTROLLED CURRENT THROUGH A COILED RESISTANCE WIRE WHICH HAS BEEN DIPPED INTO THE COATING TO BE TESTED. THE SPEED WITH WHICH A RESULT MAY BE OBTAINED MAKES THIS METHOD IDEALLY SUITED TO FOLLOW THE COURSE OF POLYMERIZATION REACTIONS. A SIMPLE APPARATUS IS DESCRIBED WHICH MAY BE CONSTRUCTED FOR THE HEARING STEP OF THE METHOD, AS WELL AS A SUITABLE WEIGHING CONTAINER. /AUTHOR/
