PROTECTIVE COATINGS

A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF THE PROTECTIVE COATINGS INDUSTRY TO ATTEMPT TO SUPPLY GENERALIZED AND PARTICULAR BACKGROUND. THE FOLLOWING CLASSES OF SYNTHETIC RESINS ARE REVIEWED: POLYESTERS, RESINS FOR WATER BASED COATINGS, THERMOSETTING ACRYLICS, FUSION COATINGS, HIGH ENERGY ACTIVATION, NEW POLYMERS, SILICATE COATINGS, AND HIGH BUILD COATINGS. FORMULATION CONCEPTS ARE DISCUSSED OF PAINTS, ANTIPLASTICIZERS, AND 3-D SOLUBILITY. METHODS OF MEASURING THE PERFORMANCE AND DURABILITY OF COATINGS ARE DESCRIBED. THE USE OF HYPRODUCTIVITY EQUIPMENT IN PAINT MANUFACTURE HAS PLACED A PRIORITY UPON THE MODIFICATION OF PIGMENT SURFACES TO PROVIDE EASE OF DISPERSION. DISPERSION THEORY IS DISCUSSED WITH METHODS OF PIGMENT SURFACE MODIFICATION. ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES OF ELECTRON MICROGRAPHS, VAPOR PHASE CHROMATOGRAPHY, INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY, RADIOCHEMICAL TECHNIQUES AND A NEW GEL STRENGTH TESTER FOR THIXOTROPIC MATERIALS ARE DESCRIBED. CORROSION INHIBITORS ARE REVIEWED AND THE SUITABILITY OF EMULSION PAINTS AS ANTI-CORROSIVE TOP COATS IS REPORTED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT ADHESION AS A DETERMINANT OF COATING PERFORMANCE OFFERS POSSIBLY THE BEST OPPORTUNITY FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF ANY GOOD ANTICORROSIVE FILM. FILIFORM CORROSION WAS INHIBITED BY CARBON DIOXIDE AT SPECIFIED CONCENTRATIONS.
