PERFORMANCE STUDY OF MULTI-PLATE CORRUGATED-METAL-PIPE CULVERT UNDER EMBANKMENT-NORTH CAROLINA
A PERFORMANCE STUDY WAS CONDUCTED ON ONE OF THE MAJOR DRAINAGE STRUCTURES OF NORTH CAROLINA. THE STRUCTURAL CAPACITY WAS ANALYZED BY OBTAINING DATA ON: (1) THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THE PIPE WAS INSTALLED, (2) THE SETTLEMENT AND DEFORMATIONS OF THE BOLTED STRUCTURE, AND (3) THE EXTERNAL PRESSURE GENERATED AROUND THE PIPE STRUCTURE DURING AND AFTER THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FILL. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE CONDUIT IS PERFORMING SATISFACTORILY. THE STRUCTURE HAS ASSUMED A CYLINDRICAL SHAPE WHICH INDICATES THAT THE EXTERNAL EARTH PRESSURE MUST BE SUBSTANTIALLY UNIFORM AROUND THE CULVERT OTHER- WISE THE FLEXIBLE STRAUCTURE WOULD HAVE COLLAPSED BY EXCESSIVE DEFLECTION. THE TOP EARTH LOAD CANNOT BE EXCESSIVELY HIGH. A PROCEDURE IS DESCRIBED FOR THE DIRECT DETERMINATION IN SITU OF LATERAL EARTH PRESSURES EXERTED AGAINST A FLEXIBLE UNDERGROUND CONDUIT.
