INTERPRETATIONS AND LIMITATIONS OF NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE
A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF STUDIES CONDUCTED USING NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE FOR DETERMINING THE STATES OF BINDING OF THE WATER IN HYDRATED CEMENT PASTE. LIMITATIONS APPEAR TO BE THAT THERE IS NO TECHNIQUE YET FOR DETERMINING THE PRECISE STATES OF PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL BINDING OF THE WATER IN HYDRATED CEMENT PASTE. THE PRECISION OF PROTON RESONANCE MEASUREMENTS APPEARS INSUFFICIENT BECAUSE OF THE EXTREME DIFFICULTY OF PRECISE INTERPRETATION OF NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE PATTERNS. THE PROTON RESONANCE FREQUENCY DEPENDS ON THE DIFFERENCE IN ENERGY BETWEEN TWO PROTON STATES REPRESENTING TWO POSSIBLE ORIENTATIONS WITH RESPECT TO THE MAGNETIC FIELD. IF THE MAGNETIC FIELD WERE COMPLETELY HOMOGENOUS, THE RESONANCE PATTERN WOULD CONSIST OF ONLY ONE INFINITESIMALLY THIN LINE AT THE RESONANCE FREQUENCY GIVEN BY A PRESENTED FORMULA. THE EFFECT OF BINDING IS DISCUSSED. HOWEVER, IT IS CONCLUDED THAT NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE CAN BE USED SUCCESSFULLY TO DETERMINE WATER ABSORPTION. A TECHNIQUE IS BEING INVESTIGATED TO STUDY DIELECTRIC CONSTANT AND DIELECTRIC LOSS FACTOR MEASUREMENTS AS A FUNCTION OF FREQUENCY.
