SKID OR SLIP RESISTANCE ?
THE CURRENT EMPHASIS ON SKID RESISTANCE MEASUREMENT AND THE FACT THAT TIRES OPERATE IN THE SKIDDING MODE ONLY RARELY RAISES THE QUESTION WHETHER SKID TESTS ARE INDEED MEANINGFUL FOR THE REALISTIC EVALUATION OF THE FRICTION POTENTIAL OF PAVEMENTS. TO DETERMINE THE PHYSICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF SKID AND SLIP RESISTANCE, THE MECHANISM OF RUBBER FRICTION IS REVIEWED. THE PRINCIPAL COMPONENTS OF RUBBER FRICTION, ADHESION AND HYSTERESIS ARE BOTH SHOWN TO BE THE CONSEQUENCE OF THE EXCITATION OF AND THE ENERGY DISSIPATION BY THE RUBBER CHAINS. IN CASE OF ADHESION THE EXCITATION IS THE RESULT OF ELECTRIC ROUGHNESS OF THE SURFACE-RUBBER INTERFACE. IN CASE OF HYSTERESIS THE CHAINS ARE EXCITED BY THE GEOMETRIC ROUGHNESS OF THE SURFACE. THE SIMULARITY OF BOTH FRICTION MECHANISMS LEADS TO A UNIFIED THEORY OF RUBBER FRICTION. THE THEORY, TOGETHER WITH A NEW INTERPRETATION OF TIRE SLIP, IS APPLIED TO SKIDDING AND SLIPPING TIRES, AND CHARACTERISTIC CURVES FOR FOUR DIFFERENT SURFACE CONDITIONS ARE DERIVED. SLIP RESISTANCE IS FOUND TO REFLECT PRIMARILY THE ADHESION PROPERTIES, SKID RESISTANCE PRIMARILY THE HYSTERESIS PROPERTIES OF A GIVEN TIRE-PAVEMENT PAIRING. SKID TESTING IS THUS NOT A RELIABLE SUBSTITUTE FOR SLIP RESISTANCE TESTS. /JM/
