PREDICTING THE FATIGUE PERFORMANCE OF TIRES

CURRENTLY, OVER 50 DIFFERENT TIRE PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS ARE MEASURED IN THE LABORATORIES ON A REGULAR BASIS. ONE OF THESE IS RESISTANCE OF A TIRE TO FATIGUE FAILURES. AS WITH OTHER TIRE CHARACTERISTICS, FATIGUE RESISTANCE IS HIGHLY DEPENDENT UPON THE SELECTION OF THE RECOMMENDED TIRE FOR SPECIFIC SERVICE CONDITIONS AS WELL AS PROPER TIRE CARE AND MAINTENANCE. FATIGUE IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT TIRE PROPERTIES TO ANALYZE. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES IN DETAIL A LABORATORY TIRE TEST WHICH HAS BEEN ADOPTED TO PREDICT THE FATIGUE BEHAVIOR OF TIRES IN SERVICE. THIS TEST IS RUN ON A STEEL DYNAMOMETER UNDER CONTROLLED CONDITIONS OF LOAD, INFLATION, AND SPEED. PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE EQUIPMENT AND TYPICAL LABORATORY FAILURES ARE INCLUDED. CONCLUSIONS OF THIS PAPER ARE: (1) ALTHOUGH VALUABLE, LAB TESTS SHOULD ONLY SUPPLEMENT THE MILLIONS OF ROAD TESTS MILES NECESSARY TO ASSURE SATISFACTORY TIRE PERFORMANCE, (2) A LABORATORY TEST HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO MEASURE THE FATIGUE PERFORMANCE OF TIRES, (3) FATIGUE PERFORMANCE OF A TIRE IS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED BY LOW INFLATION PRESSURE AND/OR HIGH LOAD AND/OR INCREASING SPEED, AND (4) TESTING OF TIRES UNDER ACCELERATED CONDITIONS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO IMPROVED TIRE PERFORMANCE. /MTRSA/
