CORROSION PREVENTION OF STEEL PILES AND FOOTINGS FOR ELEVATED ROADWAYS AND BRIDGE ABUTMENTS
THE CATHODIC PROTECTION OF STEEL IS DISCUSSED WITH EMPHASIS ON THE PREVENTION OF CORROSION IN STEEL PILES AND FOOTINGS USED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF ELEVATED ROADWAYS AND BRIDGE ABUTMENTS. SOIL CONDITIONS ARE CONSIDERED BRIEFLY IN RELATION TO THE PROBLEM. PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE OPERATION OF A MAGNESIUM-STEEL PROBE USED BY THE COMMONWEALTH DEPARTMENT OF WORKS AND DEVELOPED BY DR. I. TH. ROSENQUIST OF THE NORWEGIAN GEOTECHNICAL INSTITUTE. THE IMPORTANCE OF USING A SUITABLE PROTECTIVE COATING TOGETHER WITH CATHODICALLY PROTECTED STEEL IS STRESSED AND SOME SHORT REMARKS GIVEN ON THE PROPERTIES OF VARIOUS COATINGS AND THE ASSOCIATED DIFFICULTIES INVOLVED IN USING THEM. /AUTHOR/RRL/
