BIODETERIORATION OF PAINT AND PAINT FILMS

MICROBIOLOGICAL DETERIORATION OF PAINTS AND PAINT FILMS IS A MAJOR FACTOR IN THE LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE OF PAINT FILMS. BACTERIAL AND FUNGAL ATTACK CONTRIBUTE SIGNIFICANTLY TO A LOSS IN DECORATIVE PROPERTIES AS WELL AS FILM DURABILITY. LABORATORY AND FIELD STUDIES INDICATE THAT BACTERIAL DECOMPOSITION OF PAINT BINDERS AT THE PAINT SUBSTRATE INTERFACE MAKE AN IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO ADHESION LOSS. THE OVER-ALL RESISTANCE OF PAINT FILMS TO MICROBIAL ATTACK IS INFLUENCED BY CHOICE OF BINDERS AND PIGMENTS, PVC, THE CHALKING CHARACTERISTIC, AND THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MICROBICIDES. THE INABILITY TO PREDICT ACCURATELY THE MICROBIAL RESISTANCE OF PAINT FILMS IS ATTRIBUTED TO INADEQUATE TEST METHODS. MORE RECENT TEST METHODS CURRENTLY BEING EVALUATED BY ASTM PROMISES AN ACCELERATED TEST FREE OF ARTIFICIAL INFLUENCES WHICH MAKE THE AGAR PLATE TEST MISLEADING AND FREQUENTLY INADEQUATE. /JPT/
