ATM is Committed to Sustainable and Ecological Mobility: Fleet Renewal, New Technologies and Power Production
Milan public transit operator Azienda Trasporti Milanesi SpA (ATM Group) is committed to providing sustainable transportation in the city. The ATM Group has a goal of reducing the company’s energy consumption by 7.5% by the end of 2010. This article discusses some of the environmental initiatives that ATM Group is using. Over 70% of the ATM group’s bus and rail fleet is now electric, which reduces emissions and saves energy. The ATM Group has added some hybrid diesel/electric minibuses to its fleet, and is about to embark on a trial project with hydrogen-powered buses. The ATM Group is installing photovoltaic roofs on its depots to generate much of its energy needs. The ATM Group is also involved in efforts to introduce bike and car sharing programs in Milan. The ATM group’s energy-saving efforts extend to its office staff. Guidelines have been developed with suggestions on how to reduce energy consumption in the office.
