THE APPLICATION OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO SUPPORT A CUSTOMER FRIENDLY, SAFE, RELIABLE AND MORE SUSTAINABLE PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM

Whether public transport systems are in their earliest phases of development, or well established and in need of modernization, new technologies can support the creation of customer-friendly, safe, reliable, and sustainable public transport systems. The application and benefits of technology in public transport are well documented. For more than 15 years, technology has been used to improve situational awareness, accessibility, and service planning through the use of Computer-Aided Dispatch, Next Stop Announcement, and Automatic Passenger Counting technology, respectively. Today public transport needs sustainable technology that allows transport systems to provide high quality, reliable service that accommodates increases in ridership realizes operational efficiencies, and reduces carbon emissions. This paper will review innovative technologies as they are being deployed and developed worldwide
