GROWTH THROUGH INNOVATION: LAUSANNE'S NEW DRIVERLESS "MICRO-METRO"

Lausanne’s new driverless metro line is an example of growth through innovation. Since it went in commercial service in October 2008, the m2 line has boosted tl’s network ridership by over 20%. m2 is innovative in several ways, it is: a “micro-metro” : it is a short line (6 km) with annual ridership of 25 mios passengers. The 500 mios Euros line is successfully scaled to the size of a small city (population of only 250'000), for example with reduced distances between the 14 stations designed to be passenger friendly and highly accessible. A “mountain-metro”: it is steep and curvy. The gradient (up to 12%) strongly influenced the rolling stock design, imposing the choice of rubber tires and unusual braking and energy recycling/dissipation requirement on the trains. It also resulted in strongly inclined station platforms and screen doors. Switzerland first driverless metro: this required convincing the population and overseeing authorities of the safety and reliability of this new “urban elevator”. It also required breaking new regulatory ground and demonstrating operational system safety (including fire) through safety and risk analysis, and through extensive in situ testing
