SAO PAULO METRO LINE 4 - YELLOW. THE FIRST DRIVERLESS LINE IN LATIN AMERICA

The metropolitan region of São Paulo is a very vast urban settlement comprised of 39 municipalities, including the City of São Paulo. The Metro of São Paulo is presently a railway network with 5 lines, 69.3 km and 60 stations. The newest line, the Line 4 – Yellow, is still being implemented but part of it is already in revenue service. At the beginning of the last decade the State of São Paulo Government, the most important shareholder of Metro, decided to construct this new line taken into consideration 2 main aspects: it should be conceded to a private operator in a PPP basis and it should include the most modern railway technologies available in the world. In 2006 Metro of São Paulo and ViaQuatro, this last as a specific purpose company, signed the PPP contract and last year it was started up the revenue service in a line stretch of approximately 4 km with 2 stations in service. This was very important to assess the new technological features, such as the CBTC signaling
