EXTERIOR DURABILITY OF CATALYZED CLEAR COATINGS ON REDWOOD
BECAUSE OF THE WELL-RECOGNIZED INADEQUATE EXTERIOR DURABILITY OF CONVENTIONAL CLEAR WOOD FINISHES, MUCH INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN CARRIED ON FOR MANY YEARS, BUT WITH NO COMPLETELY SATISFACTORY SOLUTION. THIS STUDY REPORTS THE PERFORMANCE OF SOME 31 CLEAR FINISHES BASED ON CATALYZED EPOXY, POLYURETHANE AND POLYESTER RESINS. PANELS WERE EXPOSED FOR 33 MONTHS AT TWO SITES IN CALIFORNIA AND ONE IN NEW JERSEY. IN SPITE OF SOME ENCOURAGING FINDINGS, IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE SYSTEMS TESTED DO NOT FULFILL THE REQUIREMENTS OF EXTENDED DURABILITY AND RECOATABILITY. /JPT/
