SURVEY OF NONDESTRUCTIVE TEST METHODS: WHAT THEY DO, HOW THEY WORK
A WIDE RANGE OF METHODS AND EQUIPMENT FOR DETECTION OF MASS DEFICIENCY, DISCONTINUITIES, HOMOGENEITY, COMPOSITION, GRAIN SIZE, COATING THICKNESS AND DIMENSION MEASUREMENT ARE REVIEWED. NONDESTRUCTIVE TEST METHODS INCLUDE THE USE OF SENSING MEDIA SUCH AS PENETRATING RADITION (X-RAY, GAMMA RAYS, BETA RAYS, ETC.,), ULTRASONIC OR HIGH FREQUENCY SOUND WAVES, MICROWAVES, ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS, MAGNETIC FLUX, AND THERMAL OR INFRARED ENERGY. DISCUSSION OF THE MAJOR DISCIPLINES, THEIR FUNCTIONAL PRINCIPLES, AND THEIR PECULIAR USEFULNESS IN ENGINEERING MATERIALS EVALUATION OUTLINES THE TECHNOLOGY KNOWN AS NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING.
