FRACTURE, REHEALING, AND REFRACTURE OF CAST EPOXY RESIN
THREE ASPECTS OF CRACKS IN CAST EPOXY RESIN WERE INVESTIGATED: THE FRACTURE ENERGY TO FORM THEM, THE RATE AT WHICH THEY REHEAL, AND THE FRACTURE ENERGY NEEDED TO REOPEN THEM. THE FRACTURE ENERGY WAS MEASURED BY A NOVEL METHOD IN THE PRESENCE OF VARIOUS SURFACE ACTIVE AGENTS UNDER SHORT AND LONG-TERM LOADING. THE CRACKS SPONTANEOUSLY REHEALED WHEN THE CASTING WAS HEATED ABOVE THE HEAT DISTORTION TEMPERATURE TO GIVE A FRESH JOINT OF ABOUT THE SAME FRACTURE ENERGY AS THE VIRGIN MATERIAL. /AUTHOR/
