CRITERIA OF SOIL AGGRESSIVENESS TOWARDS BURIED METALS III. VERIFICATION OF PREDICTED BEHAVIOUR OF SELECTED SOILS

A SIMPLE SCHEME FOR TESTING SOILS HAS BEEN PROPOSED WHICH PERMITS THEIR PROBABLE AGGRESSIVENESS TOWARDS BURIED FERROUS METALS TO BE PREDICTED, AND A VERY GOOD AGREEMENT HAS BEEN OBSERVED BETWEEN PREDICTION AND EXPERIENCE IN A LARGE NUMBER OF SOILS. RESULTS ARE REPORTED OF CORROSION TESTS ON MILD STEEL AND A RANGE OF NON-FERROUS METALS BURIED IN A FEW SELECTED SOILS IN TEMPERATURE PROVIDE MORE DIRECT EVIDENCE ON THE RELIABILITY OF THE SOIL-TESTING PROCEDURE AND TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE SAME TESTING SCHEME CAN BE APPLIED TO FORECAST THE BEHAVIOR OF METALS OTHER THAN IRON OR STEEL. TEST OVER A PERIOD OF FOUR YEARS IN A VARIETY OF SOILS HAVE SHOWN THAT THE CORROSION OF BOTH FERROUS AND NON-FERROUS METALS CAN BE PREDICTED WITH A HIGH DEGREE OF CONFIDENCE BY A SIMPLE SOIL-TESTING PROCEDURE. ALTHOUGH THE METHOD IS MOST RELIABLE FOR STEEL, IT IS QUITE SATISFACTORY FOR LEAD, ZINC, AND ALUMINIUM. NONE OF THE SOILS EXAMINED WAS PARTICULARLY AGGRESSIVE TO COPPER.
