CRITERIA OF SOIL AGGRESSIVENESS TOWARD BURIED METALS. I. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS
EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS AND SPECIMEN RESULTS ARE GIVEN FOR A NUMBER OF FIELD AND LABORATORY TESTS FOR SOME OF THE CHARACTERISTIC PROPERTIES OF SOILS THAT MIGHT BE EXPECTED TO HAVE SOME RELATION TO THE AGGRESSIVENESS OF THE SOILS TOWARDS BURIED (ESPECIALLY FERROUS) METALS. PROPERTIES EXAMINED INCLUDE ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY, REDOX-POTENTIAL, WATER AND SOLUBLE IRON CONTENTS, PH AND VARIOUS FACTORS BEARING ON THE ACTIVITY OF SULPHATE REDUCING BACTERIA. RESULTS OF THE TEST ARE PRESENTED IN TWO TABLES AS APPLIED TO TWO DIFFERENT SOILS. INDIVIDUAL MEASUREMENTS ARE TABULATED ACCORDING TO THE MONTH IN WHICH THEY WERE TAKEN, BUT THE MEASUREMENTS WERE SPREAD OVER FIVE YEARS. MOST OF THE TESTS GIVE RESULTS HAVING A CONSIDERABLE SCATTER ABOUT THE MEAN. OCCASIONALLY, INDIVIDUAL RESULTS DIVERGE WIDELY FROM THE MEAN BUT THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT THIS IS CONNECTED IN ANY WAY WITH EITHER THE TIME OF THE YEAR OR WITH THE WEATHER PREVAILING AT THE TIME THAT THEY WERE OBTAINED.
