EVALUATION OF CARBON BLACK DISPERSIONS IN PE TO PREDICT WEATHERABILITY - PART 2
WEATHERABILITY DETERMINATIONS WERE MADE OF CARBON-BLACK- PIGMENTED POLYETHYLENE BY OUTDOOR EXPOSURE. THE SAME ASTM ROUND-ROBIN POLETHYLENE COMPOSITIONS IN THE FORM OF COMPRESSION MOLDED 1/16 IN.-THICK TENSILE BARS WERE ALSO EXPOSED. RESULTS OF THE WEATHERING TESTS ARE PRESENTED IN A CABLE. THE CORRELATIONS BETWEEN OPTICAL ABSORPTIVITIES AND WEATHERABILITIES ARE BETTER THAN THOSE BETWEEN MICROSCOPE DISPERSION RATINGS AND WEATHERABILITIES. BASED ON AN ANALYSIS OF RANKINGS, THE OPTICAL ABSORPTIVITY WAS BETTER THAN THREE TIMES AS GOOD A PREDICTOR OF OUTDOOR WEATHERABILITY OF THE 3-MIL-THICK FILMS AND BETTER THAN TWICE AS GOOD A PREDICTOR OF WEATHER-OMETER WEATHERABILITY THAN WAS THE MICROSCOPE DISPERSION RATING. AN EXCELLENT CORRELATION BETWEEN OUTDOOR AND WEATHEROMETER WEATHERABILITIES WAS OBSERVED FOR THE 3-MIL-THICK FILMS.
