STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF EPOXY COMPOSITES AND CASTINGS
TENSILE, COMPRESSIVE, FLEXURAL, AND SHEAR TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON SPECIMENS FROM UNIDIRECTIONAL AND BIDIRECTIONAL GLASS FILAMENT WOUND COMPOSITES MADE WITH FOUR EPOXY RESIN SYSTEMS. THE COMPOSITE WITH THE HIGHEST MECHANICAL PROPERTIES WAS THE ONE CONTAINING THE EPOXY WITH THE HIGHEST CAST RESIN TENSILE STRENGTH AND ELONGATION. THE INTERLAMINAR SHEAR STRENGTHS OF THE COMPOSITES INCREASED AS THE CAST TENSILE STRENGTHS OF THE RESINS INCREASED. THE DATA SHOWED A NON-LINEAR RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SHEAR AND TENSILE STRENGTHS, AND A LINEAR RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE INTERLAMINAR SHEAR STRENGTH AND THE FLEXURAL AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS OF THE UNIDIRECTIONAL COMPOSITES. KNOWING THE INTERLAMINAR SHEAR STRENGTH AND THE FLEXURAL AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS OF A CONTROL COMPOSITE, IT IS POSSIBLE TO PREDICT THE FLEXURAL AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS OF A COMPOSITE MADE WITH ANOTHER EPOXY RESIN BY MEASURING ONLY THE FLAG-PANEL INTERLAMINAR SHEAR STRENGTH OF THE NEW RESIN. THE MEASURED MODULUS OF ELASTICITY VALUES OF THE COMPOSITES AGREED CLOSELY WITH THOSE PREDICTED BY TSAI'S EQUATION BASED ON THE SPECIFIC GRAVITY AND MODULUS OF THE COMPONENTS. THE MODULUS OF THE CAST RESIN DOES NOT APPEAR TO HAVE ANY SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP TO THE MECHANICAL STRENGTH OF THE COMPOSITES, BUT IS RELATED TO THE TRANSVERSE MODULUS. THE CAST RESIN TENSILE TEST AND THE NOL RING OR FLAT-PANEL INTER-LAMINAR SHEAR STRENGTH TEST SHOULD BE USED AS A PRIMARY MEANS OF SCREENING NEW RESINS. /AUTHOR/
