SOME WEATHERING CHARACTERISTICS OF PLASTICS
OUTDOOR AGING OF PLASTICS IS LARGELY A PHOTO-OXIDATION PROCESS LEADING ULTIMATELY TO DISCOLORATION AND LOSS IN DIELECTRIC AND MECHANICAL STRENGTH. SOME OF THE WEATHERING CHARACTERISTICS OF PLASTICS ARE DISCUSSED SUCH AS EMBRITTLEMENT, DIELECTRIC LOSS, DISCOLORATION, PHOTO STABILITY AND OXIDATIVE DEGRADATION. ALTHOUGH WEATHERING RESISTANCE PARTLY DEPENDS ON THE EXTENT TO WHICH ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION IS ABSORBED AND HARMLESSLY DISSIPATED, CHANNEL BLACKS PROVIDE MORE PROTECTION FOR POLYMERS THAN THE ULTRAVIOLET ABSORBERS. POLYMETHYL METHACRYLATE AND THE FLUORINE-CONTAINING POLYMERS HAVE OUTSTANDING OUTDOOR DURABILITY.
