CORROSION PROTECTION STUDY
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF METHODS TO REDUCE THE CORROSION OF REINFORCING STEEL IN CONCRETE WHERE DEICING SALTS ARE PRESENT IS STUDIED. REINFORCING STEEL IN CONCRETE CAN BEST BE PROTECTED FROM THE CORROSIVE EFFECT OF DEICING SALTS BY COATING THE STEEL WITH ZINC, NICKEL, OR AN ASPHALT-EPOXY. ELECTROCHEMICAL ANALYSIS DETERMINED THIS EFFECTIVENESS. COPPER COATINGS OFFER PROTECTION TO THE STEEL, BUT QUICK CORROSION OCCURRED WHEN A BREAK APPEARED IN THE COATING. CATHODIC PROTECTION WAS NOT INVESTIGATED BECAUSE OF COMPLICATIONS INHERENT IN FIELD TESTING.
