THE ROLE OF RADIOISOTOPE TECHNIQUES IN HYDROLOGY

A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF THE ROLE OF RADIOISOTOPE TECHNIQUES IN HYDROLOGY. THE USE OF GROUNDWATER IS BASED ON A KNOWLEDGE OF ITS ORIGIN, DIRECTION AND VELOCITY, QUANTITY, ACCESSIBILITY, AND QUALITY. RADIOISOTOPES, BECAUSE OF THEIR HIGH SENSITIVITY OF DETECTION, ARE NOW BEING USED FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF THESE PARAMETERS. THE APPLICATIONS MAY BE CONSIDERED UNDER THREE HEADINGS' /1/ LOCALIZED GROUNDWATER STUDIES INVOLVING THE USE OF ARTIFICALLY INJECTED RADIOISOTOPES, /2/ REGIONAL GROUNDWATER STUDIES WHERE USE IS MADE OF ENVIROMENTAL RADIOACTIVITY, AND /3/ BOREHOLE LOGGING IN MEASURING LITHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS RELEVANT TO GROUNDWATER INVESTIGATIONS. THESE TECHNIQUES ARE REVIEWED AND IT IS SUGGESTED THAT ISOTOPE TECHNIQUES SHOULD BE EMPLOYED FOR INVESTIGATIONS LEADING TO THE RATIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF WATER RESOURCES.
