REPAVER MELTS NEW HOT MIX INTO OLD SURFACE
AN ASPHALTIC PAVEMENT THAT HAD SERVED 13 YEARS ON A NEW HAMPSHIRE FREEWAY HAS BEEN DE-WRINKLED AND BUILT UP USING A HEATING AND SHAVING PROCESS. THE METHOD WAS USED LAST SUMMER FOR 3.3 DUAL MILES OF A 8.5-MILE CONTRACT TO RESURFACE BOTH ROADWAYS OF I-93 IN NEW HAMPSHIRE. IN SETTING UP THIS NEW-IN-THE-AREA PROCEDURE THE NEW HAMPSHIRE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS AND HIGHWAYS HAD SEVERAL PURPOSES IN MIND. ONE WAS TO TEST ITS USE IN IRONING OUT ROUGHNESS THAT OFTEN DEVELOPS IN OLDER ASPHALTIC SURFACES. ANOTHER PURPOSE WAS TO CONSERVE AGGREGATES, COMPARED WITH THE USUAL HEATER-PLANER WHICH TAKES A ROUGH SURFACE DOWN, LEAVING THE SCRAPEDOFF MATERIAL TO BE WASTED OR USED IN SHOULDERS. A THIRD GOAL WAS TO BLEND ADDED MIX AND SOFTENED CRUST TOP INTO THE UNDERLYING MATERIAL TO FORM A HOMOGENOUS PAVEMENT WITHOUT LAMINATIONS. THE REPAVING PROCESS IS DESCRIBED.
