CONSTRUCTION SITES: PRIME TARGETS FOR CRIME
THEFT AND VANDALISM AT CONSTRUCTION SITES ARE INCREASING AT AN ALARMING RATE. HOWEVER, THE CONTRACTING AND INSURANCE INDUSTRIES HAVE FEW DATA ON THE MAGNITUDE OF THE PROBLEM, NOR DO LOCAL AND FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT ORGANIZATIONS. ACCORDINGLY, IT IS DIFFICULT TO MOUNT A SYSTEMATIC ATTACK ON THE PROBLEM. IN THE NEW YORK CITY AREA ALONE THEFT AND VANDALISM LOSSES REACHED $50 MILLION. ONE RESULT OF SUCH LOSS IS THAT CONTRACTORS INCREASE THEIR BID PRICES BY 3.5--8%. MEASURES CURRENTLY BEING TAKEN BY EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURES AND CONTRACTORS TO COMBAT THE PROBLEM ARE DISCUSSED.
