Development of emulsion for microsurfacings based on paraffinic bitumen
Micro-surfacing is a bituminous material made from a mixture of aggregate, bitumen emulsion (modified or not), fibres, mineral additives (cement or lime etc.) and organic additives. Generally, for better quality of breaking, rise in cohesion and adhesion between bitumen and aggregate, the bitumen used is naphthenic bitumen. EUROVIA found that an increase of the mechanical performances of the mix was obtained by adding an additive into the paraffinic bitumen. This article presents results from trials at Merignac investigating the formulation of the emulsions and the influence of certain additives. The results of these studies indicate the possibility of attenuating considerably the susceptibility of the microsurfacing to variations in temperature and moisture content.
