VIRGINIA'S EXPERIENCE IN PROVIDING SKID-RESISTANT PAVEMENTS
EXPERIENCE WITH WET BITUMINOUS SURFACES IS REPORTED. AS THE PRIMARY CAUSE OF SLIPPERY PAVEMENTS IN VIRGINIA IS THE USE OF LIMESTONE AND DOLOMITE AGGREGATE, ATTENTION IS DIRECTED TO FOUR METHODS OF CIRCUMVENTING THE POLISHING EFFECT OF THIS AGGREGATE: USING 100% POLISH-RESISTNAT AGGREGATE, EMPLOYING COMBINATIONS OF LIMESTONE AND POLISH-RESISTANT AGGREGATES, SPREADING THIN SAND OVERLAYS, AND EXPERIMENTING WITH THE "SPRINKLE SYSTEM" (PRECOATING A POLISH-RESISTANT MATERIAL WITH MC-70 AND APPLYING THE COLD MATERIAL ONTO THE HOT MIX IMMEDIATELY BEHIND THE PAVER. SPECIFICATIONS FOR THESE FOUR APPROACHES ARE GIVEN.
