NON-INTERSECTIONAL AUTOMOBILE FATALITIES--A PROBLEM IN ROADWAY DESIGN
Fatal automobile accidents in and about Washtenaw County, Michigan were studied since November 1961. To determine the causes of death of the occupants--the body areas injured, as well as the structures which were impacted to produce lethal injuries. In this study, 84 percent of the accidents were non-intersectional collisions with the majority (60 percent) being single car, off-road collisions. In one of five accidents (18 percent), a vehicle invaded the roadway of another by crossing the centerline or median, of traveled in the wrong lane of an expressway. It was concluded that the importance of roadside design cannot be overemphasized for its life saving benefits and injury reducing potential. More thought must be given to the concept of roadside clearance as a definitive step toward reducing the number of highway fatalities and injuries.
