CRASH PADS PROTECT MAINTENANCE TRUCKS

REAR-END CRASH BARRIERS FOR HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE TRUCKS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED BY THE CONNECTICUT DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, PATTERNED AFTER ROADWAY "GORE" COLLISION ATTENUATORS. DESIGNED TO PROTECT THE MOTORIST AS WELL AS CREW MEMBERS ON BOARD THE TRUCK, THE DEVICE CONSISTS OF A CLUSTER OF 74 LIQUID-FILLED PLASTIC TUBULAR CELLS. EACH EACH CELL CONTAINS 3 1/2 GAL. OF A MIXTURE OF WATER AND CALCIUM CHLORIDE, THE LATTER ADDED TO INSURE LIQUIDITY AT BELOW-FREEZING TEMPERATURES. THE CELLS ARE HELD IN A COMPACT FIVE-DEEP ARRANGEMENT ON THE BACK END OF THE TRUCK, USING A CANVAS WRAPAROUND WHICH CAN BE FASTENED OR DETACHED EASILY. A FLASHER SIGN ON THE TRUCK ALSO IS PROVIDED TO DIRECT MOTORISTS AROUND THE UNIT. THE REMOVABLE BARRIERS HAVE BEEN FITTED ON FOUR MAINTENANCE TRUCKS, AND OTHER TRUCKS WILL BE SIMILARLY EQUIPPED FOR SUMMER WORK, ACCORDING TO DEPARTMENT OFFICIALS. /ARTICLE/
