Vehicle actuated versus fixed time traffic signal phasing in microsimulation
Most of the microsimulation models developed in Australian current practice use fixed time settings to represent operations of signalised intersections. In reality our urban signalised intersections are operated by SCATS and there is a large variety of traffic conditions at different sites. Many of these sites have unbalanced degrees of saturation on their approaches and cannot be modelled properly using fixed time phasing. In congested conditions models with fixed time phasing tend to gridlock the network prematurely often leading the analyst to incorrect conclusions. Microsimulation software today offers the option of coding signals as vehicle actuated (VA) which greatly improves the realism of microsimulation models. This paper makes an attempt to quantify the effect of replacing the fixed time phasing with the VA using VISSIM and PARAMICS models.
