WATER BUMPERS PROTECT MUNICIPAL VEHICLES
IN AN EFFORT TO REDUCE THE DAMAGES RESULTING FROM LOW SPEED COLLISIONS, THE CITY OF NEW YORK HAS TURNED TO ENERGY ABSORBING "WATER BUMPERS" INSTALLED ON A VARIETY OF PUBLIC VEHICLES. THE TYPICAL WATER BUMPER DOES ITS BEST WORK WHEN IMPACTED AT SPEEDS BELOW 15 MPH. WATER BUMPERS FOR PASSENGER VEHICLES AND LIGHT TRUCKS COST APPROXIMATELY 100 DOLLARS EACH. HEAVY DUTY UNITS FOR USE ON VEHICLES IN EXCESS OF 6,000 POUNDS GVW WILL RUN FROM 250 TO 300 DOLLARS EACH. THE ASSEMBLIES ARE QUITE DURABLE AND MAY BE TRANSFERRED FROM VEHICLE TO VEHICLE. IF THE VINYL CELLS ARE PUNCTURED OR TORN, THEY ARE RELATIVELY EASY TO MEND BY HEAT WELDING. THE BACK-UP BOARD IS LESS EASILY REPAIRED AFTER DAMAGE, BUT IT CAN BE REPLACED EXPEDITIOUSLY. THE WATER BUMPER APPEARS TO BE POSITIVE PROTECTION FOR VEHICLES WHICH MUST TRAVEL DAILY ON CONGESTED STREETS IN URBAN AREAS.
