APWA/EQUIPMENT TIPS FROM MINNEAPOLIS CONVENTION

IN THE LATE 1960'S THE CITY OF WINNIPEG, CANADA, BECAME CONCERNED OVER VEHICULAR EXHAUST. THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS AND THE PROVINCIAL DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH UNDERTOOK A SERIES OF TESTS WITH 23,000-POUND DUMP TRUCKS FUELED BY GASOLINE, PROPANE, AND DIESEL FUEL TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE LAST EXHIBITED EXHAUST ADVANTAGES THAT WOULD OUTWEIGH THE PRESUMED COST SUPERIORITY OF THE MORE COMMON FUELS. PROPANE WAS CLEARLY SUPERIOR FROM AN AIR QUALITY STANDPOINT. HOWEVER, AFTER TWO YEARS OF OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE IT WAS FOUND THAT THE PROPANE-DRIVEN TRUCK ALSO RANKED FIRST IN LEAST COST PER MILE, WITH GASOLINE SECOND AND THE DIESEL TRUCK THIRD. THE PROPANE VEHICLE ALSO DID NOT EXHIBIT THE COLD-START DIFFICULTIES THAT HAD BEEN ANTICIPATED DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. IT IS NOTED THAT NO DEFINITIVE CONCLUSIONS SHOULD BE DRAWN, AS ONLY THREE TRUCKS WERE INVOLVED.
