BRIDGE RAIL LIGHTS SCRUBBED MECHANICALLY
LIGHTING FOR THE DECK OF THE SAN MATEO--HAYWARD BRIDGE OVER SAN FRANCISCO BAY IS PROVIDED BY A SEVEN- MILE LONG CONTINUOUS STRETCH OF FLUORESCENT LAMPS ATOP A THREE-FOOT HIGH MEDIAN BARRIER. THE LENSES ARE SOILED BY SALT SPRAY AS WELL AS BY OIL AND DUST THROWN UP BY TRAFFIC. UNTIL RECENTLY THE LENSES WERE SCRUBBED BY A PROCEDURE THAT REQUIRED THREE DAYS TO COMPLETE. A LOCAL MAINTENANCE FOREMAN HAS DESIGNED A SPRING-LOADED SOFT PLASTIC BRUSH, MOUNTED ON THE FRONT END OF A DUMP TRUCK, THAT HAS 12-INCH BRISTLES EXTENDED TO 26 INCHES OUTSIDE DIAMETER AND ROTATES AT 150 RPM. THE BRUSH, IN CONJUNCTION WITH OTHER ELEMENTS OF A CLEANING SYSTEM, MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO CLEAN BOTH SIDES OF THE BRIDGE (14 MILES) IN THREE HOURS.
