WINTER MAINTENANCE-WHY WE NEED A NATIONAL ORGANIZATION
THIS PAPER PRESENTS SOME CONCLUSIONS ON WINTER MAINTENANCE PRACTICES ON RURAL TRUNK ROADS BASED ON INFORMATION PROVIDED BY COUNTY AUTHORITIES PARTICIPATING IN A SURVEY DESIGNED TO DETERMINE WINTER MAINTENANCE PRACTICES ON RURAL TRUNK ROADS AND MOTORWAYS A FEW YEARS AGO. THESE CONCLUSIONS SHOW SIGNIFICANT VARIATIONS IN MAINTENANCE PRACTICES AND EQUIPMENT. THE NEED FOR A NATIONAL WINTER MAINTENANCE ORGANIZATION IS STATED, WHICH WOULD COORDINATE EFFORTS, ISSUE ADVISORY RECOMMENDATIONS, PROMOTE RESEARCH, AND SET STANDARDS FOR WINTER MAINTENANCE PLANNING AND PRACTICE. /TRRL/
