PREPARATION FOR THE HIGHWAY SNOW SEASON: A RATIONAL APPROACH

EACH COUNTY AUTHORITY IN GREAT BRITAIN MAKES ITS OWN DECISIONS REGARDING THE PREPARATION OF ITS WINTER MAINTENANCE EQUIPMENT. THE DECISIONS TAKEN ARE BASED ON THE EXPERIENCE GAINED IN THE PREVIOUS YEARS AND NOT ON ANY NATIONAL EXAMINATION OF SNOWFALL RECORDS. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE INCLUSIVE DATES BETWEEN WHICH WINTER MAINTENANCE EQUIPMENT SHOULD BE AVAILABLE FOR CLEARANCE AND SALTING PURPOSES CAN BE BETTER DETERMINED FROM AN EXAMINATION OF THE METEOROLOGICAL RECORDS. THE MAJOR PART OF THIS PAPER DESCRIBES HOW THE METEOROLOGICAL RECORDS AT 114 OBSERVATORIES IN GREAT BRITAIN WERE EXAMINED IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE EXTREME DATES ON WHICH SNOW FELL OR LAY ON THE GROUND. BASED ON THESE DATA, ISOPLETHS WERE PRODUCED WHICH WILL BE OF CONSIDERABLE INTEREST TO HIGHWAY MAINTNENACE ENGINEERS. RESULTS PREDICTED FROM THE ISOPLETHS ARE COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS OF A QUESTIONNAIRE TO COUNTY AUTHORITIES REGARDING THE DATE ON WHICH THEIR HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE EQUIPMENT IS READY FOR WINTER USE. /TRRL/
