Advances in Information Technology Applications for Supply Chain Management
Twenty-five years ago, the author wrote an essay on the past, present, and future of information systems and technology in logistics management for the Transportation Journal’s 25th anniversary issue. The essay predated the Internet, and personal computers were in their infancy. With the Journal celebrating its 50th anniversary, the author reflects on changes in IT in the past 25 years. He focuses on opportunities for further improvement with regard to IT applications. He describes the difference between logistics and supply chain management, updates the taxonomy of IT applications in supply chain management, describes advances in execution processes, strategic design and optimization, and connecting customers and suppliers. Improvements in computing and display technology, communications technology, and algorithm development will continue to benefit supply chains in the future. Some new technologies may, however, will produce an overwhelming amount of data, and supply chain management will require higher levels of data mining and analysis.
