STUDDED TIRES - THE IOWA EXPERIENCE
THIS ARTICLE IS BASED ON A POSITION PAPER BY THE IOWA HIGHWAY COMMISSION. IT REVIEWS THE VARIOUS TYPES OF STUDDED TIRES, THEIR EFFECTIVENESS, THEIR USE IN OTHER STATES AND THE WEAR AND TEAR THEY CAUSE ON PAVEMENT SURFACES. THEY CONCLUDE THAT THE USE OF STUDDED TIRES HAS ONLY MARGINAL SAFETY BENEFITS AND THESE ARE HARDLY WORTH THE PREMATURE MAINTENANCE TO PAVEMENTS THEY CAUSE.
