THE ROAD IN RELATION TO TRAFFIC REQUIREMENTS--NORWAY

PART 1 OF THIS REPORT CONCERNS GEOMETRIC FEATURES OF ROADS AND MOTORWAYS, INCLUDING SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ALIGNMENTS AND CROSS-SECTIONAL PROFILES FOR MOUNTAIN ROADS AFFECTED BY PROBLEMS OF SNOW CLEARANCE. INVESTIGATIONS WERE UNDERTAKEN IN NORWAY SINCE 1968 TO GAIN EXPERIENCE IN THE OPERATION OF MOUNTAIN ROADS WHERE SNOW WAS ONE OF THE PROBLEMS. THE FIRST SECTION DESCRIBES THE WINTER MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS AND SOME BASIC THEORIES CONCERNING SNOW-DYNAMICS. A SPECIAL CHAPTER DEALS WITH THE MAIN CLIMATIC VARIABLES, WHICH MUST BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN DESIGNING MOUNTAIN ROADS. THE MAIN SECTION OF THE REPORT DEALS WITH THE HIGHWAY LOCATION, AND THE DESIGN OF CROSS-SECTIONS AND THEIR ADJACENT TERRAIN. PROPOSED RULES APPLYING TO THE LOCATION PROCEDURE ARE DESCRIBED TOGETHER WITH THE SCIENTIFIC MATERIAL IN JUSTIFICATION OF THEM. EMBANKMENT HEIGHTS, DEPTH OF DITCHES, EMBANKMENTS AND CUT-SLOPES AND ROUNDING RADIUS' BETWEEN SHOULDERS AND SLOPES, TO SERVE AS GUIDELINES FOR THE CROSS-SECTIONAL DESIGN, ARE PROPOSED. A SPECIAL CHAPTER LISTS THE MAIN CONCLUSIONS. PART 2 OF THE REPORT CONCERNS ROAD SAFETY EQUIPMENT AND ROAD MARKING. THE NORWEGIAN PROPOSALS FOR ROAD MARKINGS ARE BASED ON A UNIFORM USE OF COLORS AND TYPES OF LINES. YELLOW IS USED FOR ALL MARKINGS SEPARATING TRAFFIC MOVING IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS, AND WHITE IS USED FOR ALL MARKINGS SEPARATING TRAFFIC MOVING IN THE SAME DIRECTION. THE NUMBER OF LINE TYPES AND COMBINATIONS OF LINES ARE KEPT TO A MINIMUM IN ORDER TO MAKE THE SYSTEM EASY TO APPLY AND SIMPLE FOR THE ROAD USERS TO COMPREHEND.
