MEASUREMENT OF PAVEMENT WITH PLASTER-CASTS

A METHOD IS DESCRIBED WHEREIN GROVES ARE CUT INTO PAVEMENT SPECIMENS BY A REVOLVING-WHEEL TESTING MACHINE EQUIPPED WITH STUDDED TIRES. THE CROSS-SECTION OF THE GROOVES, WHICH REPRESENTS THE PAVEMENT WEAR PRODUCED BY THE TIRES, IS MEASURED BY MEANS OF PLASTER - CASTS. THE DIFFERENCE IN AREA I.E. THE PROGRESSING WEAR, IS DETERMINED BY A PLANIMETER CARRIED ACROSS THE CAST FROM A FIXED LEVEL WHICH IS GIVEN BY TWO FIXED MARKS ON THE PAVEMENT SPECIMEN. THE SCOPE OF THE MEASUREMENTS AND THE REQUIREMENTS REGARDING THE MEASURING METHOD ARE OUTLINED. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE MARKING OF THE PLASTER CASTS AND THE MEASURING OF THE CASTS. THE APPLICATION OF THIS METHOD IS LIMITED TO RELATIVELY SMALL LENGTHS OF CASTS IN THE RANGE OF 15 TO 20 CM. THE METHOD, HOWEVER, IS SUFFICIENT AND PRACTICAL FOR THE PROPOSES DESCRIBED.
