THE USE OF A RADIO ISOTOPE TO DETERMINE PAVEMENT WEAR
AN INVESTIGATION IS REPORTED OF THE USE OF RADIO ISOTOPE IRON 59 TO MEASURE THE WEAR OF A PAVEMENT SUBJECTED TO THE ACTION OF PASSENGER CARS EQUIPPED WITH STUDDED TIRES. EMPHASIS IS PHACED ON THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN SURFACE WEAR AND DEFORMATIONS WHICH OCCUR WITH FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS. THE METHOD, WHICH HAS AN OVERALL ACCURACY OF 15 PERCENT, IS CONSIDERED TO BE RELIABLE. THE PROCEDURES INVOLVED IN THE CORING OF SAMPLES AND THEIR PLACEMENT IN THE PAVEMENT ARE DESCRIBED AND ILLUSTRATED WITH PHOTOGRAPHS AND DIAGRAMS. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE MEASUREMENT SYSTEM WHICH INCORPORATES A SCINTILLATION DETECTOR FOR GAMMA RADIATIONS. NOTES ON THE COMPUTATION OF TOTAL WEAR ARE PROVIDED IN AN APPENDIX.
