WEAR OF ASPHALT UNDER SIMULATED STUDDED-TYRE TRAFFIC

THIS INVESTIGATION OF THE WEAR OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS CAUSED BY STUDDED TIRES, INVOLVED THE LABORATORY TESTING OF VARIOUS ASPHALT SAMPLES UNDER SIMULATED STUDDED TIRE TRAFFIC. THE INVESTIGATION WAS PLANNED IN ORDER TO COMPARE VARIOUS MIXES FOR THEIR RESISTANCE. LABORATORY TESTS ARE DESCRIBED, WHICH MADE USE OF A MACHINE DEVELOPED AND EMPLOYED FOR THE STUDY OF FRETTING OF ASPHALT MIXES UNDER NORMAL TIRES. CONCLUSIONS BASED ON THE RESULTS OF THE TESTS ARE SUMMARIZED. THE RESULTS WERE COMPARED WITH THOSE OF ROAD TRIALS. SINCE IN THE LABORATORY THE AMOUNT OF WEAR IS MEASURED AS THE LOSS OF WEIGHT IN GRAMS, AND ON THE ROAD AS THE RUT DEPTH IN MM, THE COMPARISON IS MADE ON THE BASIS OF RELATIVE ABRASION.
