LABORATORY METHODS OF TESTING WEAR RESISTANCE TO STUDDED TYRES
THE DAMAGING FACTORS DUE TO THE ACTION OF TIRE STUDS IS ANALYZED AND THE INFLUENCE OF TRAFFIC CHARACTERISTICS ON PAVEMENT WEAR DUE TO STUDS IS DISCUSSED. TEST METHODS ARE REVIEWED WHICH INCLUDE THOSE WHICH SIMULATE THE ACTION OF STUDDED TIRES. SPECIAL ATTENTION IS DIRECTED TO STUD KINETIC ENERGY AND MATHEMATICAL FORMULAE ARE DEDUCED. THREE MAIN TYPES OF TRAFFIC SIMULATORS ARE CONSIDERED, NAMELY, HORIZONTAL CIRCULAR TEST TRACK, TEST TRACK ON THE INNER SURFACE OF A FIXED VERTICAL CYLINDER, AND TEST TRACK ON THE OUTER SURFACE OF A ROTATING DRUM. METHODS OF TESTING OF AGGREGATE ARE OUTLINED. NOTES ON THE VELOCITY AND KINETIC ENERGY OF A STUD AND OTHER ASPECTS ARE APPENDED.
